The topic will be on digging, dividing, and storing dahlias! One of our most popular meetings. If this is your first year growing, this will be an especially helpful topic. It will also serve as our annual meeting, which is an important part of maintaining our society.
December Member Meeting/Holiday Party
SWIDS is hosting a holiday party to celebrate an amazing year of dahlia growing and community. We will be meeting at the Idaho Pizza Company, located at 7444 Fairview Avenue in Boise. Bring a white elephant gift valued at around $10!
August Member Meeting: Dahlia Bouquet Workshop
Let’s build dahlia bouquets! You bring some of your favorite dahlias and a vessel. We will provide foliage and filler.
We will also be discussing the arrangement entries for the SWIDS Dahlia Show.
This will be an in person meeting.

June Member Meeting: Bug & Pest Management

Cutting Sale
We are having a dahlia cutting sale! Cuttings are established, rooted plants taken from dahlia tubers that often bloom sooner, and eliminate risk of tuber rot! They will still produce a full clump in the fall! Join us from 10 am to 3 pm at 10320 W Mossy Cup Dr. in Boise, ID 83709.

May Member Meeting: Cutting Sale & Member Q&A
Our May meeting will take place on Thursday, May 9th at 7:00 p.m. It will be part cutting sale, part member question and answer!
If you missed the earlier SWIDS sale last month, you have another opportunity to take home more dahlias! We will have a select number of different dahlia cuttings available for sale, including a limited amount of the SWIDS flower of the year, Saddle Rock Tiny Giant! The hybridizer Linda Holmes-Cook generously donated tubers to our group so that we could take cuttings and multiple the stock available to our members, giving more people the opportunity to enter it into the show in September. We have a very limited amount to offer. They will be available on a first come, first serve basis, to paid members only. Limit one per household. Tiny giant cuttings will be sold for $20 a piece, and rooted tubers for $15 a piece. These tubers have had cuttings taken from them, which can impact the energy available in the tuber.
Instead of a formal meeting topic, we will be breaking up into small groups for a get to know you/question and answer breakout session. This is your chance to get to know your fellow SWIDS members, ask dahlia growing questions, and get tips and tricks from other dahlia lovers. If you are new to SWIDS, or new to growing dahlias, this would be a great meeting for you to attend in person!
Because part of the meeting will be a sale, and the other part will be small group discussion, we will not be doing a hybrid meeting. We will resume hybrid zoom and in person meetings June.

Tuber Sale Day 2 @ Franz Witte
Join us for our 3rd annual tuber sale day at Franz Witte! We’ll be there during business hours.
Members Only Pre-Sale
At 10:00 a.m., the members only tuber sale will open! A password will be sent out via email to all paid members prior to the opening of the website. Allowing paid members to shop the sale first is one of the best membership perks!
You can pick up your tubers at day 1 or day 2 of the tuber sale, or contact Sarina at sarina.lagor@gmail.com to make other pickup arrangements.

Dahlia Tuber Workday
This is where we bag, label, and organize tubers for the sale. Tubers being donated to the sale can be brought that day or dropped off earlier at Randy’s house if you know you will be able to attend.
Boise Flower & Garden Show
SWIDS will have a booth at the Boise Flower and Garden Show for the second time! Last year we had an amazing time meeting fellow gardeners, converting people into dahlia growers, and selling tubers generously donated from Jim Lamson of BJ’s Dahlias.
This year we’re stepping up our game and giving a presentation to the community! Our presentation will focus on the basics of growing dahlias, and how SWIDS has created a special community of gardeners. Our presentation will be given on Saturday, March 23rd at 4:30 p.m.

Anyone can volunteer! Don’t feel like you have to be an expert grower to be at the booth. Anyone who loves dahlias and is a participating SWIDS members is welcome to sign up.
Tuber Workday
Jim Lamson, of BJ’s dahlias, has graciously donated numerous dahlias to our society for us to sell at the Boise Flower and Garden Show. This event will be a workday where we will be bagging and labeling tubers. Bring your coffee and meet us at 22730 Ten Davis Road, Parma, ID, 83660 at 9:00 a.m.
March Member Meeting: Worms & Vermiculture
Our March meeting will take place on Thursday, March 14th at 7:00 p.m. We will be having a presentation from Boise’s own worm lady: Jan Shirley! She will be giving a presentation on how to start your own worm farm, harvest worm castings, and make worm tea, all which can be used to help you grow healthy, beautiful dahlias.

First Annual Southwest Idaho Dahlia Society Show
How much time and energy do you spend tending to your dahlias? Wouldn’t you love to share one or more of your favorite blooms with others and experience fellow dahlia enthusiasts’ blooms? Well now you can!
Announcing the First Annual Southwest Idaho Dahlia Society Show

Sunday, September 17, 2023 to Noon
-Entering the show is FREE.
-What can you enter?
-Single blooms – dahlias classified by the American Dahlia Society
-Five bloom entries – dahlias classified by the American Dahlia Society
-Unclassified Dahlias – dahlias not listed in classification books
-Arrangements – dahlias are the predominant flower
-Challenge dahlia – everyone grows the same dahlia and we compete for best bloom; cultivar to be announced soon!
-ADS Seedling Bench Evaluation
-All those new to showing will be judged in the novice category so you are not competing against advanced exhibitors.
-Ribbons and prizes will be awarded.
-We will help you learn how to select your bloom or blooms.
-We will have a class with Senior Judge and hybridizer of Maks dahlias, Allan Kaas in April of 2023 to teach us how to select and stage dahlias for exhibition.
